Choice deferral, indecisiveness and preference for flexibility

چکیده
We introduce a model of menu choice in which a person’s psychological tastes and revealed preferences may be distinct. The former is modeled by means of a possibly incomplete (but otherwise rational) preference relation <, and the latter by a completion <∗ of that relation. The two relations are connected through an axiom which formalizes the following intuitive rule: “Whenever in doubt about which menu is better, don’t commit now; just leave options open.” The main result of this paper is that, under the usual assumptions of the menu choice literature, this deferral property alone forces <∗ to exhibit a preference for flexibility, thus giving credence to the proverb above. In particular, we find that there is a fundamental tension between non-monotonic preferences, such as preferences for self-control, and tendency to defer choice due to indecisiveness.

To Choose or Not to Choose: the Effects of Conflict and Risk on Choice Deferral
When making decisions, people are often faced not only with a choice among available alternatives, but also with the option of deferring choice. Two factors have been shown to influence the likelihood of choice deferral, namely, choice difficulty and deferral-related risk. Two experiments considered the interaction between these two factors. Choice difficulty was operationalized as the presence...
متن کاملChoice Deferral in Models of Preference Accumulation
This paper models choice deferral using a sequential sampling and accumulation theory of preferential choice. It assumes that choice options are accepted or rejected if accumulators reach an upper or lower threshold, and that choice is deferred if these thresholds are not crossed by a fixed time. The proposed model can explain a wide range of findings regarding the determinants and consequences...
متن کاملIndecisiveness and response to risk in deciding when to decide
When making decisions, people must determine not only what to choose but also when to choose. Do individuals modulate behavior in response to potential risks associated with delay in determining when to choose? The present work provides evidence that at least one group of people—indecisive individuals—do not. Two process-tracing studies simulated a 5-day college-course selection period in which...
متن کاملUtility Representation of an Incomplete Preference Relation
We consider the problem of representing a (possibly) incomplete preference relation by means of a vector-valued utility function. Continuous and semicontinuous representation results are reported in the case of preference relations that are, in a sense, not “too incomplete.” These results generalize some of the classical utility representation theorems of the theory of individual choice, and pa...
متن کاملIndifference or indecisiveness? Choice-theoretic foundations of incomplete preferences
A commonly held belief in economics is that an individual’s preferences that are revealed by her choices must be complete. This paper takes issue with this position by showing that one may be able to distinguish between indifference and indecisiveness of an agent upon observing her choice behavior. We relax the standard Weak Axiom of Revealed Preferences (WARP) and show that a potent theory of ...
